Our worship to God is not just about singing songs. Rosie Smith is a valued member of the Foundations team. Here she talks briefly about her particular calling.

What is Prophetic art? Is it in the Bible? Did the idea come from God in the first place? “Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the City of Jerusalem on it.” Ezekiel 4.1

“The Child Within” was a sculpture I made from wire and mixed media, where a soft vulnerable child was reaching upwards, crying out inside a huge metal head. The ears and eyes were bound. This sculpture became the vehicle to express my longing for more and would be the start of something so powerful it would change my life. Why could my sculptured head not hear or see? I had to let go of striving. When someone prayed for me I met God powerfully. This man had a picture for me. ‘So God speaks in pictures?’ My art was now dedicated totally to God’s Will, to be used as He saw fit. I could give my art back to the One who gave it me in the first place as my act of worship.

I’d been working on a series of paintings, prints and sculptures of children dancing in a circle. During the worst storm I have ever experienced I was painting at home. As the tiles flew off the roof and trees were uprooted, my painting of the children seemed to be invaded by the storm itself. The children were inside a whirlwind. The light shining through the middle of the circle was like a bright column yet the children were not affected by the storm. The more I painted these children the more the light took on greater significance. How could these children be still full of joy and dancing? There’s something about this light! They were dancing in and out of it and yet were in the eye of the storm. So that’s why it wasn’t touching them? Little did I know that these paintings were prophetic for my life. God was to take me through a storm but as long as I held onto His light,

He would keep me in the perfect peace I had been searching for.

For over 20 years these paintings and sculptures became the foundation of my work as Artist in Residence, the job that was totally provided by God. Probably thousands of children have heard my testimony through these prophetic works of art, even painting their own versions, as I have described God’s rescue plan and destiny for their lives. All I know is that God used the physical act of producing art to bypass my logical reasoning. In doing so He touched my heart with His glorious love so that nothing else really mattered. This process continues to transform the way I think. I now run workshops to release people into hearing God through art, including at Foundations. Other workshops I run are prayer painting and ‘Art Therapy’ as my secular students affectionally call them!
